As a 43-year-old introverted woman living with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), I've learned many valuable lessons throughout my life journey. From navigating a childless marriage to managing a variety of pets, here are my top 20 "lessons learned" that have shaped my perspective and helped me find contentment.
Embracing PCOS and Health Challenges
1. PCOS doesn't define you: While PCOS has significantly impacted my life, particularly in terms of fertility, I've learned that it doesn't define who I am as a person. It's a part of me, but not the whole story.
2. Self-advocacy is crucial: When dealing with health issues like PCOS and GERD, being your own advocate is essential. Many doctors may not fully understand or appreciate the complexities of these conditions, so it's important to educate yourself and speak up about your symptoms and concerns.
3. Lifestyle changes can make a difference: Although there's no cure for PCOS, I've found that making dietary and exercise changes can help manage symptoms and improve overall well-being. Additionally, Metformin has been a game-changer for my PCOS.
Navigating Relationships and Social Life
4. Quality over quantity in friendships: As an introvert with a small social circle, I've learned to value deep, meaningful connections over a large number of acquaintances. Having a few close friends can be more fulfilling than a wide social network.
5. Marriage is a journey, not a destination: Almost 19 years of marriage have taught me that relationships require constant work, communication, and mutual support, especially when facing challenges like infertility, military deployments, and financial hardships.
6. Pets can provide immense emotional support: Our five furry companions (plus more over the years) have provided comfort and joy, particularly during difficult times. They've taught me about unconditional love and the importance of living in the moment.
Thriving as an Introvert
7. Embrace your introverted nature: Rather than trying to change who I am, I've learned to appreciate and leverage my introverted qualities, such as being a good listener, having a very observant eye, and thinking deeply before speaking.
8. Create a nurturing home environment: As a homebody, I've discovered the importance of creating a comfortable and peaceful living space that supports my need for solitude and recharging.
9. Find work that aligns with your personality: Working from home has allowed me to thrive professionally while honoring my introverted tendencies and need for a quiet environment.
Overcoming Financial and Emotional Challenges
10. Resilience is built through adversity: The financial struggles and emotional ups and downs we've faced have ultimately made us much closer, stronger, and more adaptable as a couple.
11. Budgeting and financial planning are essential: Learning to manage money effectively, especially during tough times, has been crucial for our long-term stability and peace of mind.
12. Emotional well-being requires active management: Dealing with the emotional impact of PCOS, infertility, and other life challenges has taught me the importance of prioritizing mental health and seeking support when needed.
Personal Growth and Self-Discovery
13. Embrace change and adaptability: Moving around the US (Connecticut, Kansas, Florida, Alabama) and adapting to military life taught me the value of flexibility and openness to new experiences.
14. Continuous learning is key: Whether it's about managing PCOS, developing new skills for work, or exploring personal interests, I've found that a commitment to lifelong learning enriches life and keeps the mind active.
15. Self-care is not selfish: Taking time for myself, whether it's through playing games, watching YouTube videos, or simply resting, is crucial for maintaining physical and emotional well-being.
Finding Contentment and Purpose
16. Redefine success on your own terms: Living a life that doesn't conform to societal expectations (e.g., being childless or having a small social circle) has taught me to define success and happiness based on my own values and priorities.
17. Gratitude transforms perspective: Focusing on what I have rather than what I lack has been transformative in finding contentment and joy in everyday life.
18. Purpose can be found in unexpected places: While I may not have become a parent as initially hoped, I've found purpose and fulfillment in other areas of life, such as caring for pets and pursuing personal passions.
19. Authenticity leads to genuine happiness: Being true to myself, including embracing my introverted nature and unique life circumstances, has led to a more authentic and satisfying life experience.
20. Life is a continuous journey of growth: At 43, I've realized that personal growth and self-discovery are lifelong processes. Embracing this mindset has allowed me to approach challenges with curiosity and openness.
These lessons have shaped my journey as an introverted woman living with PCOS and navigating life's various challenges. They've taught me resilience, self-acceptance, and the importance of finding joy in the unique path I've traveled.
TLDR: Key Takeaways
